The Pitmaster Bundle

Close the loop with wireless temperature control!

The ultimate in smoker surveillance plus our entirely wireless draft-control fan and the new 2nd generation Predictive Thermometer.

Precision temperature control

The Combustion Engine™ is a wireless blower that teams up with a Giant Grill Gauge and Predictive Thermometer to maintain rock-steady temps for 24+ hours on a single charge.

The Combustion Engine receives grill temperatures directly from the gauge or thermometer and adjusts its variable-speed fan to hold it right in the sweet spot  - locking in a perfect smoking temp for long periods.

Watch your meat from anywhere

The Giant Grill Gauge connects directly to your Combustion Engine and your Predictive Thermometer, and streams temperature data to MeatNet™ Cloud directly with its onboard WiFi! Compatible with most grills and smokers.

Cook longer (and hotter and wetter)

The 2nd generation Predictive Thermometer still has the most sensors of any wireless thermometer (8!) to measure everything from the surface to the center. This tolerates extreme cooking temps of up to 900ºF. And it’s suitable for vacuum-sealing (hello sous vide!) and has the highest ingress protection possible (IP69K). It can now run up to 92 hours on a single charge, all while conveying more data – and refreshing 6-12x faster than competitors.

And it has all the insightful exclusive features that set Combustion apart - things like the first and only live food safety calculator (SafeCook™). Or how about a unique Physics-based Prediction Engine™ that models heat-dynamics and evaporative cooling to accurately predict cook time? We could go on and on (and don’t worry, we do, elsewhere).

Set contains:

  • Giant Grill Gauge with huge display, built-in WiFi, 1000ºF temperature limit
  • Combustion Engine – the only wireless, rechargeable blower on the market
  • 2nd Generation Predictive Thermometer - 8 sensors, hermetically sealed, 900ºF (482ºC) max temp

When ordering:

Select Celsius or Fahrenheit markings for the manual control knob on the Combustion Engine

Select Heat Shield or Heat Deflector depending on your style of smoker/grill (more about that in the FAQ below)

Possibly necessary extra:

The Combustion Engine fits standard grills, but you may need an Optional Mounting Kit depending on your cooker (see FAQ)

Bundle ships separately - estimated delivery dates for each tool are listed in checkout (and on your order receipt). Orders ship first come first served, preorder quantities are limited.

All orders are shipped in the order received.

It takes 1-3 business days to process orders and get them on their way. At that point, you'll get a shipping confirmation email. Shipped!

In periods of very high demand, products may be temporarily back ordered while we are waiting for inventory to arrive.

In that case, the estimated ship date will be listed in checkout (for example “ESD: Aug 21, 2023”) - that’s when your order is expected to arrive at our US warehouse for processing.

When it arrives depends on the shipping method, location and (for international orders) customs inspections and other random events.

Domestic shipping

Prices and shipping options are listed in checkout. (Please don't use the fast delivery options for products that are out of stock or for preorders. It won't get there faster.)

Worldwide shipping

No surprises! We ship to most countries Delivered Duties Paid (DDP). That means everything-taxes, duties, import fees, and shipping fees-are calculated and pre-paid at check-out.

How difficult is it to install the Combustion Engine?

It depends on the grill or smoker in question. Some grills are super easy and require no tools, others might require you to drill a hole at an appropriate location for the fan exhaust.

So, long story short, it’s as difficult (or easy, depending) as installing pretty much any third-party blower.

Before we ship, we will have installation guides available for the most popular grills.

How powerful is the fan?

The fan is sized to supply up to 15CFM (cubic feet/min), which is honestly overkill for most grills and smokers. In most cases, the engine will reduce the fan’s output automatically.

When set to max temperature, the fan will output it's full power to stoke the fire as hot as possible.

Do I need the Giant Grill Gauge to use the Combustion Engine?

You’ll need either the Giant Grill Gauge OR a Predictive Thermometer measuring the grill/chamber temp. That input tells the Combustion Engine how much to blow to keep the temp steady. You can set the target temp using the dial, the gauge, or the Combustion app.

Connecting either tool to the Combustion app provides another level of features - temp tracking, graphing, temp alerts, and more goodness.

Does the Combustion Engine have a "sear" mode?

Yessssss. Fire it up! Turn the dial to “max” to get those coals pumping. That’s awfully handy even when you’re not smoking.

Do I need an adapter/mounting kit?

Our standard adapter—we call it the snout—is a high-temperature silicone duct with compressible silicone foam and a spring retention clip. It can fit onto many grills and smokers that have typical adjustable vent holes in the bottom of the grill, like a Weber Kettle grill, Weber Smokey Mountain, a PK Grill, and many more.

For others, we offer a variety of mounting plates that attach to the snout and then mount directly to your grill or smoker. This allows you to easily remove the blower from the snout between uses.

Adapters can be added to your order now or as an accessory anytime before it ships. (And yes, you can order “extra” standard snouts - that way, the Combustion Engine can be easily moved from your favorite smoker to your other favorite smoker.)

Almost-universal standard snout

  • Fits standard grills

Big Green Egg/Kamado-style smoker adapter

  • Big Green Egg plate – 81 x 125mm (3.2 x 4.9in)
  • Large Kamado plate - 89 x 76mm (3.5 x 3in)
  • Small Kamado plate - 84 x 70mm (3.3 x 2.75in)

Threaded mounts (designed to screw into ball valve)

  • Designed to screen into common ball valve sizes: ¾in, 1.5in, 2in

30mm Port

  • Fits ports 30mm / 1.18in in diameter

How long does it take to recharge?

Recharging time depends on the power supply and USB cable you use. It’s a big battery.

  • 24hrs with 5V USB 2.0
  • 4 hrs with USB type-C
  • 1 hour with USB type-C rated for power delivery (PD)

*Power supply not included.

Can it run on power too?

It sure can. You can run it from the USB port, and if using USB type C power supply, it can run and charge at the same time.

What changed with the 2nd generation Combustion Predictive Thermometer?

A more durable, fully hermetic seal and higher maximum temperature range.

Using high-temperature ceramic-to-metal brazing, we create a true hermetic seal between the ceramic handle and steel tube. Unlike conventional seals or adhesives that can degrade over time, this brazing process creates a permanent metallurgical bond at the molecular level.

The result is a completely hermetic seal that's tested to IP69k standards – the highest ingress protection rating available.

Key improvements:

  • True hermetic seal - safe for vacuum sealing, sous-vide, and deep-frying
  • Extended temperature range - high-temp region now reaches 900ºF (482ºC), up from 600ºF
  • Enhanced sensor performance - relocated ambient sensor provides faster, more accurate readings
  • More durable construction while maintaining all original smart features.

We also introduced built-in WiFi to the second generation accessories (WiFi Display, WiFi Booster, Giant Grill Gauge).

Does this mean the old ones are obsolete?

Not at all! If you have an original Predictive Thermometer that's working great for you, don't worry!

We'll continue supporting it with new app features and firmware upgrades, just like always. And your 1st gen Combustion Predictive Thermometer (CPT) even works with 2nd generation WiFi accessories. Just add one (WiFi Display, WiFi Booster, or Giant Grill Gauge) to your existing set to take advantage of your home WiFi network and watch your temps remotely from anywhere.

The 1st gen Predictive Thermometer is still fantastic for most cooking setups. While the original design performed well overall, we saw an opportunity to improve the durability of the main seal. Our second-generation design uses high-temperature ceramic-to-metal brazing to create a permanent, hermetic seal between the ceramic handle and steel tube.

The 2nd gen CPT offers enhanced durability, improved ambient temperature sensing through a relocated sensor, and an extended temperature range, now reaching 900ºF in the high-temp region (up from 600ºF).

For most everyday cooking applications, the 1st generation CPT continues to work great.

What about WiFi?

Any Combustion Predictive Thermometer (CPT) can be used with any of our new WiFi accessories (WiFi Display, WiFi Booster, Giant Grill Gauge) to connect to WiFi and send live cook data to anywhere in the world with internet access. Be sure to get the newest firmware to use this feature!

WiFi's higher transmission power (more than 10x that of Bluetooth) allows for excellent coverage throughout your home and, through your network, anywhere with internet access. This is especially useful when cooking from your basement or other locations where lower-power signals might struggle.

Why isn't WiFi in the thermometer itself?

It comes down to optimizing battery life while maintaining performance. WiFi draws significantly more power than Bluetooth, and the thermometer's battery must be small enough to fit near the probe tip. By using Bluetooth's energy-efficient design, we can achieve industry-leading battery life (over 92 hours) while still maintaining rapid data updates - every 5 seconds during normal cooking, and up to 5 times per second when it matters most.

Using a separate tool for WiFi connectivity means the thermometer can dedicate its power to what matters: collecting data, calculating predictions, running algorithms, SafeCook™, and all the other features that make the CPT special.

This design choice helps us maintain the longest functional battery life of any wireless thermometer, even while processing more data than our competitors.

Will the Giant Grill Gauge fit my grill?

The Giant Grill Gauge is compatible with most grills and smokers, including popular brands like Big Green Egg, Traeger, Weber, and more.

If in doubt, read on:

  • You'll need a clear, circular area of 4.5 inches in diameter for the display
  • You'll need a center pass-through hole for the sensor tube

Attachment Methods:

  • Standard: 1/4-20 threaded tube with wing-nut (preferred)
  • Alternative: M4-threaded sensor tube with matching wingnut

How easy is it to set up the Giant Grill Gauge?

Setup is straightforward. Attach the mount to your grill where your old gauge was, then secure it with the wingnut.

The Giant Grill Gauge display snaps onto the mount magnetically. Once attached, all you have to do is turn it on.

Connect it to your Wi-Fi network easily using the Combustion app.

Does the Giant Grill Gauge work as part of the mesh network? Specifically, will it help get the signal from my CPT out of the grill box better?

Yes! It’s part of the Bluetooth mesh network (Meatnet™) and also adds WiFi to your toolset.

The Giant Grill Gauge connects to Meatnet and communicates with other Combustion tools, but also connects directly to your Wi-Fi network. This gives you the ability to remotely check temps using the app – from far beyond Bluetooth range.

From the CPT’s point of view, it’s creating a direct line-of-sight Bluetooth connection inside the grill!

The signal coming from the CPT doesn’t have to penetrate the box, it has a backdoor. And then the Gauge passes that on to whatever else you’ve got - Boosters, Displays, Apps. And so forth.

That also means the Gauge is not dependent on WiFi - you can still use it as a repeater with traditional Meatnet, even if the internet goes down.

On top of this, the Gauge is contributing its own data (grill temp) to the pool, which creates all kinds of interesting and useful analytical possibilities. Mathematical!

Will the Giant Grill Gauge have high/low temp alarms? Like for flame-outs or flare-ups, or whatever?

Yes! Custom alarms are a highly-requested feature.

That's coming to the Combustion App very soon and will work natively with the Gauge and Predictive Thermometer.

Cooks will be able to set an alarm and will be alerted through the app as well as by the Gauge itself.
